Fishing For Fun
What I did
- Designed and built the game solo in Unreal Engine Blueprints in three weeks
- Designed the harpoon as both a traversal tool (swinging) and a weapon
- Modified Lyra's template Blueprints to add the new systems
Problem
The harpoon had to feel good for both movement and combat, and the new systems had to be injected into Unreal’s template Blueprints inside the multiplayer Lyra framework.
In Fishing For Fun you use a harpoon both to fight and to get around. You swing through the level, collect fish, and upgrade your stats.
Challenges
Creating responsive harpoon physics that felt good for both movement and combat, as well as modifying Unreal template Blueprints to inject the new systems, all within the multiplayer Lyra framework.
Outcome and lessons
This project improved my understanding of physics-based gameplay and arcade game design principles, and taught me a lot about the quirks of Unreal Engine.
